From How I Built This Listener to Asking Guy Raz for Advice

In high school I listened to How I Built This thinking, "maybe one day." This month, I was on the show asking Guy Raz for advice.

Guy is a big reason starting a business felt possible to me. He takes something complicated, building a company from scratch, and makes it approachable.

The Spark

I distinctly remember listening to the Ben and Jerry's episode and learning they got started with a $5 course on how to make ice cream. Look at them now.

That's what How I Built This does. It shows you the origin stories aren't as polished as they seem. Everyone starts somewhere small.

Full Circle

Getting to sit across from Guy and Danny Meyer (Founder of Shake Shack) and ask them for advice on the Advice Line felt like a full-circle moment.

My question was about foodservice. Boostcous is picking up a lot of momentum on DTC, and now starting to get onto retail shelves. The next growth lever we're starting to think through (in 18-24 months) would be food services.

We just had our first Target line review, and now I'm looking at what comes after retail.

What's Next

You'll have to wait for the episode later this month to hear their advice.

Thank you both for having me.

And congrats Danny on your book "What Could Possibly Go Right", out September 29. Mine is already pre-ordered from Amazon.

The Takeaway

When I was listening to How I Built This in high school, I never imagined I'd be on the other side of that microphone. But that's how these things work. You listen, you learn, you build, and eventually the path circles back in ways you didn't expect.

If you're in the early stages of building something, keep going. The stories that inspire you today might be the ones you're telling tomorrow.

The episode drops later this month.
